Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City--The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) awarded the Medal for Valor, the highest military recognition for acts of bravery in combat, to 1LT Dhell Jhun C. Evangelista during the AFP’s 89th Founding Anniversary on December 20, 2024, at Camp Aguinaldo.
The award recognizes 1LT Evangelista’s extraordinary bravery and unwavering commitment as the Assault Platoon Leader during a fierce encounter with approximately 150 Abu Sayyaf Group militants at Sitio Kurellem, Silangkum, Tipo-Tipo, Basilan Province, on August 12, 2009. His exemplary leadership and courage resulted in the neutralization of ten (10) ASG militants, the recovery of sixteen (16) high-powered firearms, and the successful rescue of two (2) wounded Marines.
1LT Evangelista, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of the nation, is the 43rd recipient of the award. Their actions embody the highest ideals of courage and selflessness, inspiring his comrades and the entire Filipino nation.
The award was received by his brother, Mr Denver Evangelista.
To honor and commemorate their sacrifice, MFV awardees and/or their dependents receive a lifetime monthly gratuity of PhP125,000.00; employment in government agencies; priority in the acquisition
and/or lease of public lands; exception from payment of tuition and matriculation fees; admission to the Cadet Corps, Officer Candidate Courses, and other AFP sources of commission; and discounts, among others.
