CAMP AGUINALDO, Quezon City -- Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Romeo S Brawner Jr visited the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade, Philippine Army in Iligan City on January 24 to personally pay his respects during the wake of the four (4) soldiers who were killed in a treacherous attack by the Dawlah Islamiyah–Maute Group in Barangay Liningding, Munai, Lanao del Norte last January 23.
The fallen soldiers were identified as SSg Diosito A. Araya (Inf) PA, Sgt Gilbert P. Arnoza (MI) PA, Sgt Junel M. Calgas (SC) PA, and Pvt Sean Mark Laniton (Inf) PA.
Accompanied by the Commanding General of the Philippine Army, Lieutenant General Antonio Nafarrete, General Brawner extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved families, honoring the bravery, dedication, and selfless service of the fallen heroes.
During the visit, General Brawner also met Corporal Rollen L. Dela Cruz (Inf) PA, who was wounded in action during the same incident. In recognition of his courage and sacrifice, Cpl Dela Cruz was awarded the Wounded Personnel Medal. The AFP Chief of Staff assured the wounded soldier of the AFP’s full support as he continues his recovery.
General Brawner likewise met and spoke with troops on the ground, acknowledging their professionalism, discipline, and resilience despite the tragic loss of their comrades. He emphasized the importance of remaining mission-focused, vigilant, and united, and assured the troops that the AFP leadership stands firmly behind them.
“We are also here to carefully study the incident to determine what we can do to prevent incidents like this from happening again.” said the AFP Chief.///
