CAMP AGUINALDO, Quezon City -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) underscored the importance of interagency unity and operational readiness as emergency response forces were formally mustered at Camp Aguinaldo on January 16, in preparation for the Philippines’ hosting of ASEAN 2026.
The Department of National Defense (DND) led the activation of the Joint Task Group on Emergency Preparedness and Response (JTGEPR), bringing together key agencies to strengthen coordination for large-scale emergencies during the ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings. The AFP serves as lead for the Search, Rescue, and Response Task Group, working closely with the Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine National Police, and Philippine Coast Guard to ensure a unified response capability.
AFP Chief of Staff General Romeo S. Brawner Jr. emphasized that national preparedness for ASEAN 2026 depends on strong interagency cooperation and a Whole-of-Nation approach. “This shows what can be achieved when the AFP and our partner agencies work together toward a shared goal,” Gen. Brawner said, citing improved coordination, interoperability, and common standards in disaster response.
During the ceremony, Gen. Brawner received the Certificate of Accreditation for the 525th Combat Engineer Battalion, Philippine Army, following its successful completion of the National INSARAG Accreditation Process for Urban Search and Rescue. He described the milestone as both an achievement and a responsibility to sustain high standards in life-saving operations.
DFA Undersecretary Maria Hellen B. Dela Vega, Director General for Operations of the ASEAN National Organizing Committee, served as keynote speaker. Through the activation of the JTGEPR and the accreditation of its disaster response units, the AFP reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding lives, supporting civil authorities, and ensuring a safe, secure, and successful ASEAN 2026.///
