CAMP AGUINALDO, Quezon City -- The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) honored its soldier-athletes and coaches, and launched the observance of National Dental Health Month during the flag raising ceremony in Camp Aguinaldo on February 2, 2026.
A total of 117 soldier-athletes and soldier-coaches from the Philippine Army, Philippine Air Force, and Philippine Navy were recognized for their contributions to Team Philippines in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games held in Thailand from December 9 to 20, 2025. AFP personnel accounted for 13 percent of the country’s total medals, earning 5 gold, 5 silver, and 26 bronze medals, contributing to the Philippines’ 6th place overall finish among ten participating nations.
In his message, General Romeo S. Brawner Jr., AFP Chief of Staff, said the achievements of the awardees reflect the core values of the military. “Their achievement reflects the same values we uphold in uniform—perseverance, professionalism, and service to country. We commend them not only for the medals they earned but for the honor they brought to the AFP and to the nation,” he said.
During the ceremony, the Chief of Staff, AFP Commendation Medal and Ribbon was awarded to Technical Sergeant Margarito J. Angana Jr. PAF, and nine others for their service as soldier-coaches, while the Meritorious Achievement Medal was conferred on Sergeant Romeo E. Jasmin Jr. PAF, and 59 others for securing gold medals as soldier-athletes. Lieutenant General Rommel P. Roldan PAF, and six others were likewise awarded for their role as supervising and monitoring officers of the AFP delegation.
The AFP also marked the start of National Dental Health Month, observed every February pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 599, underscoring the importance of oral health as part of overall well-being and military readiness.
“Health is built through discipline and consistency. Oral health is part of that discipline. Neglected health concerns, no matter how small, affect readiness, focus, and long-term effectiveness. In the Armed Forces, where attention to detail defines performance, prevention is not optional - it is a responsibility,” Gen. Brawner emphasized.
Throughout February, the AFP Dental Service will conduct oral health promotion activities, including preventive programs, education initiatives, and a nationwide Adopt-A-School Program, reaffirming the AFP’s commitment to the health of its personnel, their families, and the communities they serve.///
